Avionyx Lands Electric Air Taxi Contract, Set for Hiring Boom

Avionyx S.A., a software engineering services company based in San Jose, Costa Rica, has been awarded a contract by Joby Aviation to perform software testing and verification in support of Joby’s ongoing Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification program for its all-electric air taxi.

Avionyx will work with Joby to ensure all software running on the aircraft meets its requirements and is compliant with the required industry standards, as subject to FAA oversight and approval.

The award will see Avionyx grow by at least 40 engineers to support its core team of experienced personnel, with the new roles expected to be full-time on-site software engineering positions at the company’s San Jose facility.

Commenting on the partnership, Larry Allgood, CEO of Avionyx, said: “We’re honored and thrilled to be selected by Joby to assist with the verification of flight software across numerous aircraft systems. They are clear leaders in this exciting new industry and we’re excited to be working with them.”

“Our business and team are rapidly growing, and we need embedded software engineers with experience developing and testing flight software. Background in electrical engineering, electronics, computing, or aerospace is a plus,” Allgood added. “It’s an exciting time to be in aviation, and the opportunity to help bring Joby’s remarkable aircraft to market puts us right at the forefront of the electric revolution.”

For more than 30 years, Avionyx has provided software engineering services to leading US-based avionics manufacturers, leveraging the strategic location of Costa Rica and its exceptional human capital since 2005. Its objective is to play a key role in bringing to market new and innovative aeronautical technologies, such as eVTOL aircraft, that will change the way people fly in the coming years.

Joby is developing an all-electric, four passenger aircraft that can take off and land vertically with a maximum range of 150 miles and a top speed of 200 mph. The company began flying full-scale prototypes in 2017 and has completed more than 1,000 flight tests.

Joby aims to launch passenger service in 2024, offering a fast, clean, and quiet way for people to move around congested metropolitan areas and other communities.
